CPCS Tower Crane – A04a & A04b Course

The CPCS Tower Crane – A04a & A04b course is designed for individuals who operate or intend to operate tower cranes in construction environments. This training ensures operators gain the necessary skills and knowledge to operate tower cranes safely and efficiently, whether they are self-erecting (A04a) or static (fixed) tower cranes (A04b), following industry regulations and best practices.

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical and practical training on the safe operation of tower cranes. Participants will learn how to safely erect, operate, and dismantle tower cranes, including load handling and working at height. The course covers both A04a (Self-Erecting Tower Cranes) and A04b (Static Tower Cranes), ensuring that operators are fully prepared for the complexities of working with different types of tower cranes on construction sites, ensuring compliance with LOLER 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations), PUWER 1998 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations), and BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.

What the Course Covers

• Overview of tower crane types, including self-erecting and static tower cranes

• Understanding crane components, control systems, and safety features

• Pre-use inspections and maintenance requirements for tower cranes

• Load chart interpretation and safe load handling

• Safe erection and dismantling of tower cranes (A04a and A04b)

• Working with slingers/signallers and other site personnel

• Lifting, placing, and moving loads safely with a tower crane

• Compliance with LOLER 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER 1998 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations)

• Identifying hazards on site, including working at height and in confined spaces

• Communication and safety protocols on site

Certification

Successful candidates will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Tower Crane (A04a & A04b). This can be upgraded to a Blue Competent Operator Card after completing the required work experience and NVQ assessment.
